A study of Daniel 9:24 removes all doubts that the Messiah did indeed anoint the Mercy Seat with His Blood.
Daniel 9:24
“Seventy weeks have been decreed for your people and your holy city, to finish the transgression, to make an end of sin, to make atonement for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most holy place,” (New American Standard Bible).
We have broken Daniel 9:24 into six separate parts, so as to ease analysis.
“Seventy weeks have been decreed for your people and your Holy City, to
- Finish the transgression,
- Make an end of sin,
- Make atonement for iniquity,
- Bring in everlasting righteousness,
- Seal up vision and prophecy,
- Anoint the Most Holy Place.” (New American Standard Bible)
Daniel 9:24 therefore is a prophecy that the Messiah will anoint the “the Most Holy Place” of the Ark of the Covenant, with His Blood. The Bible is here referring to the Mercy Seat of the Ark of the Covenant.
The anointing of the Mercy Seat of the Ark of the Covenant by the Blood of Jesus Christ, is prophesied in Daniel 9:24, and was fulfilled by Jesus Christ, as we shall see.
Unfortunately, most versions of the Bible translate the Hebrew words “quaadaashiym qodesh” in Daniel 9:24 as “most holy.” Many interpret this as the anointing of the Messiah. This is however incorrect.
Strong’s Definitions of the two Hebrew words “quaadaashiym qodesh.”
“Quaadaashiym”
Strong’s definition (6942) is translated “to be ceremonially or morally clean”.
“Qodesh”
Strong’s definition (6944) is translated “a sacred place or thing”.
- The two words directly translated from the Hebrew mean “the Most Holy” and also “Most Holy Place.”
- The two words together mean “the Most Holy, Most Holy Place.”
- The two words, used elsewhere in the Old Testament, always refer to a place and never to a person.
- The words refer therefore to “The Most Holy, Most Holy Place”, which we now refer to as “The Holy of Holies” or to “The furniture in the Most Holy Place”.
- The Mercy Seat of the Ark of the Covenant, the most important piece of furniture in the Holy of Holies, was the one anointed by the Blood of the Messiah.
- We have already seen in Sections 11 and 12 that the date of this anointing of the Mercy Seat was 33 AD.
- Only the Messiah could anoint the Mercy Seat with His Blood.
The Typology of the Old Covenant and the New Covenant
The Typology of the Old Covenant and the New Covenant fits perfectly with Ron Wyatt’s discovery of the Blood of Jesus Christ on the Mercy Seat of the Ark of the Covenant.
We believe that Jesus Christ fulfilled quite literally the Old Covenant, by anointing the Mercy Seat with his Own Blood, at the time of the Crucifixion, in full fulfilment of Daniel 9:24 (see above).
We cannot fully understand the New Covenant without first grasping the Old Covenant. In brief, the Old Covenant involved sprinkling the blood of a perfect goat onto the Mercy Seat in the Holy of Holies to atone for sins. The scapegoat went free into the wilderness.
The following is a simplified account of what actually took place on the Day of Atonement , although the whole subject is studied in greater depth in Detailed Biblical Support For Ron Wyatt’s Discovery Of The Ark Of The Covenant With The Blood Of The Messiah On The Mercy Seat
Bulletpoints
- Each year on the Day of Atonement, they performed the following ceremony.
- The priests selected two perfect male goats.
- Both were presented to God.
- They cast lots and chose the sacrificial goat
- They kept the sacrificial goat to offer it as a blood sacrifice for sin.
- They did not break any of its bones
- They sent the other goat, the scapegoat, into the wilderness with a red cord tied around its horns.
- They cut the throat of the sacrificial goat outside the Temple and collected its blood in a special basin.
- The high priest then entered the Holy of Holies, wearing special priestly garments, and carrying the basin of blood from the sacrificial goat.
- The high priest remained in the Holy of Holies, in pitch darkness, for a total of three hours.
- The high priest then prayed before the Ark of the Covenant, asking God to forgive the Jewish people for their sins over the previous 12 months.
- The high priest then poured the blood of the sacrificial goat onto the Eastern or right hand side of the Mercy Seat.
- God then appeared in Shekinah Glory between the two Cherubim over the Mercy Seat.
- God forgave the sin of the Jewish people.
- The high priest stood up and shouted, “It is finished.”
- The sacrifice of the goat, the high priest’s prayer of repentance for the Jewish people, and the appearance of God’s Shekinah Glory over the Mercy Seat fulfilled the Old Covenant.
The New Covenant, fulfilled by the Messiah, Jesus Christ
We have listed below the various events that took place during the Trial and Crucifixion so that the reader can compare the New Covenant with the Old Covenant.
Jesus Christ fulfilled the Old Covenant and provided a New Covenant in His Blood
The heart of the Old Covenant is the Temple Sacrifice on the Day of Atonement. Jesus did NOT abandon completely the Old Covenant, but replaced it with a New Covenant based on the same model, becoming Himself the Lamb of God. Jesus Christ did not abandon the Old Covenant, but fulfilled it.
- God had already declared in Jeremiah 31:31, “Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a New Covenant with the house of Israel”.
- Early in His ministry, Jesus had already declared in Matthew 5:17, “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfil”.
- At the Last Supper, Jesus Christ said these very famous words, recorded in Matthew 26:26-28, “And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, “Take, eat; this is My body”. Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. For this is My Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins”.
The whole Old Covenant is described in detail in the New Testament
Paul describes the Old Covenant in Hebrews 9:1-15, and we want to highlight the following points:
- The detailed description of the entire ceremony in the New Testament highlights its importance for all Christians to understand.
- Jesus Christ takes on the role of High Priest in the New Covenant.
The book of Hebrews records that Jesus Christ poured His Blood onto - the Mercy Seat of the Ark of the Covenant in Heaven.
Jesus Christ poured His Own Blood onto the Mercy Seat of the Ark of the Covenant in Heaven
It is written in Hebrews 9:11-12,
“He came as High Priest of this better system that we now have. He went into that greater, perfect tabernacle in Heaven, not made by men, nor part of this world, and once for all took blood into that inner room, the Holy of Holies, and sprinkled it on the Mercy Seat; but it was not the blood of goats and calves. No, he took his own blood, and with it he, by himself, made sure of our eternal salvation,” TLB.
The above verses state that:
- There is a “greater, perfect tabernacle in Heaven.”
- Jesus Christ is the High Priest of the New Covenant.
- Jesus Christ poured His Own Blood onto the Mercy Seat in Heaven.
Jesus Christ is the Lamb of God of the New Covenant
- This is proved by the following:
- Jesus Christ was born in Bethlehem, which is only a short distance from Jerusalem.
- Gabriel appeared to the shepherds of the fields of Bethlehem to announce the Birth of Jesus.
- These shepherds were special shepherds. The Temple authorities employed shepherds to rear the sacrificial lambs for slaughter in the Temple.
- Gabriel was, in effect, announcing to these shepherds that the Lamb of God had just been born, which was in the very place where all the other sacrificial lambs were born.
- John the Baptist said, in John 1:29, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” at the start of Jesus ministry.
- Revelation 13:8 describes Jesus Christ as the “Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.”
Jesus Christ precisely fulfilled the Old Covenant with the New Covenant in His Blood
We propose examining the different parts of the Old Covenant in a table format to show how Jesus Christ fulfilled the Old Covenant and became the Lamb of God in the New Covenant.
| OLD COVENANT | NEW COVENANT |
| There was a high priest every year who celebrated the Old Covenant | Jesus Christ is The High Priest of the New Covenant for Eternity |
| The priests chose two perfect adult male goats | Jesus Christ and Barabbas were chosen by Pontius Pilate |
| The two goats were presented by the priests outside the Temple | Jesus Christ and Barabbas were presented to the crowds outside the Praetorium |
| The scapegoat was chosen by lots | Barabbas was chosen by the crowds |
| The scapegoat later received the Rite of Atonement, and was set free | Barabbas was set free, which is a picture of the Gospel |
| The sacrificial goat was then sacrificed, and the High Priest then entered the Holy Place with the blood of the sacrificial lamb | Jesus Christ was the High Priest, and the Crucifixion Site became the Holy Place of the New Covenant. God sacrificed Jesus Christ on the Cross as the Lamb of God. |
| The High Priest was completely alone in the Tabernacle | Jesus Himself was the only High Priest of the New Covenant once and for all in Eternity |
| The High Priest spread blood on the horns of the altar in the Holy Place | The Blood of Jesus Christ was smeared all over the Cross |
| The High Priest prayed to God to forgive the sins of the people | Jesus Christ prayed for God to forgive the sins of the people |
| There was a confession of sin by the high priest over the scapegoat | Jesus Christ, the High Priest of the New Covenant, did NOT confess sin, because He was without sin. Instead, Jesus Christ became the Blood Sacrifice to take away sin. |
| The scapegoat bore all the sins of the people to an uninhabited land | In the New Covenant, “The blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin,” I John 1, 7 |
| The blood of the sacrificial goat was sprinkled onto the Mercy Seat of the Ark of the Covenant, in the Holy of Holies | His Blood fell onto the Mercy Seat of the Ark of the Covenant below the Cross, in Jeremiah’s Grotto, which became the Holy of Holies of the New Covenant |
| The high priest then removed his ceremonial linen garments | When Jesus Christ was crucified all four of his priestly garments were removed |
| The Temple Sacrifice happened every year on the Day of Atonement | Jesus Christ was crucified on Passover, AD 33, on one occasion only |
| On the Day of Atonement the high priest made atonement for the Jewish people | On the Day of Crucifixion, Jesus Christ died for the sins of the whole world |
| By Rabbinic tradition, the high priest spent 3 hours in the Holy of Holies, in the pitch darkness | Jesus Christ spent 3 hours in total darkness on the Cross, and the darkness was world wide |
| During this 3 hour period, God appeared in Shekinah Glory between the Cherubim, over the Mercy Seat | During this 3 hour period, Jesus Christ was rejected by God the Father, and atoned for the sins of the world |
| By Rabbinic tradition, at the end of this period of 3 hours, the high priest stood up and said, “It is finished” | At 3 pm, after 3 hours of darkness all over the world, Jesus Christ stood up on the Cross to announce His 7th announcement from the Cross. He said, “It is finished”. |
| The Day of Atonement was to be an everlasting annual statute | The New Covenant replaced the Old Covenant permanently |
| God destroyed the Old Covenant completely, and signified this by ripping apart the Great Curtain of the Temple. Jesus Christ fulfilled the Old Covenant perfectly. Christ became both the High Priest and the Lamb of God. Jesus Christ poured His Own Blood on the Mercy Seat in Heaven, according to Hebrews 9: 11 Jesus Christ poured out His Own Blood the Mercy Seat on Earth, according to Daniel 9:24 |
Summary
- Jesus Christ fulfilled the Old Covenant (Matthew 5:17), and consequently replaced the Old Covenant with a New Covenant.
- Jesus said: “This cup is the New Covenant in My Blood”, 1 Corinthians 11:25.
- According to the New American Standard Bible Jesus Christ entered Jerusalem on March 29th, A.D.33 and therefore in fulfilment of Daniel 9:25,26 (see Section 12).
- Within a few days, Pontius Pilate tried and eventually crucified Him.
- Jesus Christ was the Lamb of God (John 1:29).
- He also was the High Priest of the New Covenant (Hebrews 8:1).
- As High Priest, He entered Heaven and spilled His Blood on the Mercy Seat in Heaven (Hebrews 9:11,12).
- As High Priest He also fulfilled the Old Covenant. Spilled His Blood on the Mercy Seat of the Ark of the Covenant (Daniel 9:24).
- Matthew 27:51: “Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split.”
- When Jesus Christ died on the Cross, the rocks split, signifying that He had completely fulfilled the Old Covenant as His blood anointed the Mercy Seat of the Ark of the Covenant.
- God the Father then destroyed the Old Covenant Temple system completely and permanently, by tearing the veil from top to bottom between the Most Holy Place, and the Holy of Holies.
John 1:5-10 sums up the New Covenant.
“This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness. We lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another. The blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.
If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins. He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us”.
This indicates that anyone may enter the true Holy of Holies in Heaven. Though the Blood of the True Messiah, Jesus Christ.
Jesus Christ has fulfilled the Old Covenant completely and furthermore Spilled His Blood as a perfect sacrifice on the Mercy Seat in Heaven. On the Western Side of the Mercy Seat on Earth, at the Crucifixion in AD 33.
